I knew my campaign would be an uphill battle, but my personal fight against hyperbole in conversation and social media appears to be a battle not to be won. Yet that will not stop me from fighting it. Language, honest and exact, is our best chance to continue our republic. Using terms like nazi and communist when it isn’t exactly the right term has long been dangerous, but now, with a dopamine driven social media machine, is amplified and truly threatening.
It begins with elected leaders, but each of us is personally responsible to stop exaggerating, stop name calling, and stop swearing on social media. Start being as nuanced as we can with 280 characters, and realize the attempts of others to do such good and straining work. We each must realize our hypocrisies where we fail to rule ourselves by logic and believe in the good faith of many struggling with ideas that don’t have solutions as easy as some would have you believe.
